David Nelson, MBA, is a business leader from
Old Greenwich, Connecticut. He serves on
the Board Audit and Finance Committee and
the AARP Foundation Board of Directors. He
is executive vice president of VaporStream,
Inc., a Chicago-based software company.
Previously, he was chief operating officer of the National
Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, a nonprofit
focused on teaching entrepreneurial and life skills to young
people from low-income communities. His extensive
career with IBM spanned 33 years. Mr. Nelson serves on
the advisory board of Envision EMI, which creates unique
experiences for high-achieving young people, and mentors
graduate students at Northwestern University’s Kellogg
School of Management.
N. Joyce Payne
Joyce Payne, EdD, of Rocky Mount, North
Carolina, is an academic, executive and
authority on women’s issues from Rocky
Mount. She chairs the AARP Foundation
Board of Directors and serves on the Board
Audit and Finance Committee. Dr. Payne is
executive director of the National Endowment for the Public
Trust, an organization committed to advancing principled
leadership, inspired scholarship and trusted stewardship.
Previously she was director of human resources and
minority programs for the National Association of State
Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. She founded the
Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, which has awarded
over $50 million in scholarship assistance and capacity-
building support.
Charles E. Reed
Charley Reed is a long-term care consultant
from Olympia, Washington. He serves on
the Board Governance Committee, the CEO
Evaluation Committee and the National
Policy Council. He is also a trustee on the
AARP Insurance Trust. Mr. Reed is a long-
term care consultant for his firm, C.E. Reed and Associates.
He was previously deputy secretary of Washington State’s
Department of Social and Health Services and assistant
secretary of Washington’s Administration of Aging and
Adult Services. He chairs the Washington State Home Care
Quality Authority as well as the Long-Term Care Committee
of the National Academy for State Health Policy. The
Washington State Aging and Disability Administration
named a building in his honor.
T. George Rowan
George Rowan, PhD, is a professor from East
Lansing, Michigan. He serves on the Board
Member Value Social Impact Committee and
the AARP Foundation Board of Directors,
and previously served as AARP Michigan
State President. Dr. Rowan is a professor at
Michigan State University (MSU) and holds an extension
appointment. Earlier in his professional career, he was
director of MSU’s David Walker Research Institute and a
principal in the Grand Rapids Public School System. As
a volunteer, Dr. Rowan serves on the Ingham Regional
Medical Center Prostate Cancer Awareness Committee and
assists with programming for the American Cancer Society.
T. Byron Thames
Byron Thames, M.D., of Orlando, Florida, is a
physician and a medical director for several
companies. He serves on the Board Member
Value Social Impact Committee and the
AARP Services, Inc. Board of Directors. Dr.
Thames is employed as medical director of
Florida Hospital Human Resources, the Darden Employee
Clinic and COMPNET, a managed care organization for
occupational medicine. He also is a medical consultant to
two quality analysis health care systems. Previously, he
was chief medical consultant to numerous corporations
including Walt Disney World and Sea World. His extensive
board experience includes service with the Florida Academy
of Family Physicians and Florida Medical Association.
