Lawmakers Back Bills
To Fight Medicare Fraud
AARP has long advised members to help combat
the $60 billion annual cost of Medicare fraud by
looking out for scam artists and carefully scru-
tinizing Medicare bills. ; Now Congress is try-
ing to expand legislative efforts on this front,
with several bipartisan bills focused on fraud
and building on antifraud measures already
included in the health care law. ; One of the
main proposals is the Medicare Common Access
Card Act, which would establish a pilot program
to develop a Medicare “smart card” to protect
beneficiaries’ information. Currently, Medicare
cards have visible Social Security numbers. The
bill is sponsored by Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and
cosponsored by Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.;
