She’s channeled Jane Austen and spouted Shakespeare, so it’s easy to
forget how funny Emma Thompson can be. Yet she ogled the world
through Coke-bottle glasses in two Harry Potter films, and terrorized children—
wart-faced and snaggletoothed—in Nanny McPhee. Of course, it’s Emma the Serious who’s won Oscars for acting and writing. And if acting is the love of her life,
actors are her life’s loves. After a fling with future House star Hugh Laurie, she
was married to frequent costar and director Kenneth Branagh for six years. In
2003 she wed Sense and Sensibility costar Greg Wise, the father of her nine-year-old daughter, and that same year the pair took in a 16-year-old Rwandan refugee.
An activist, Thompson speaks out against the international sex-trafficking trade.
But lest you think she’s going all serious on us again, the next time you’re at her
London home, look for her Oscar statuettes. You’ll find them in the loo.
