Kate
Higgins
Age: 70
Hometown:
Portland, OR
Occupation:
Retired educator
Style: Athletic
The makeover:
Kate prefers com-
fort over high
fashion, but com-
fortable doesn’t
have to mean frumpy. We updated
Kate’s look with a short haircut and
graduated color (dark at the nape, with
a lighter shade through the sides and
crown). The vest and turtle-neck sweater
by Lauren Active slenderize her midsec-
tion, while the knit pants by Eileen Fisher
are comfy without looking dowdy.
Kate says: “As you get older, you find
out you don’t know it all, so you stay open
to change. This is definitely a change.”
Cynthia
Pfanstiel
Age: 62
Hometown:
Sandy Springs, GA
Occupation:
Decorator
Style: Sexy
The makeover:
Cynthia has plen-
ty of chic, sophis-
ticated style, but
she doesn’t think
of herself as sexy. By shortening her cut
and adding curl, we gave her hair a little
more femininity. Her wide-set eyes are
drawn inward with makeup. This youth-
ful floral dress by Nanette Lepore
accentuates Cynthia’s bustline with
gathers and trims her midsection with
diagonal seaming at the waist.
Cynthia says: “I love this dress. It
makes me feel sexy. I think I need to
wear dresses more often.”
Anthony
Zee
Age: 63
Hometown:
Santa Barbara, CA
Occupation:
Theoretical
physicist
Style:
Sophisticated
The makeover:
Tony thinks of
himself as a citi-
zen of the world. We updated his pro-
fessorial look with a Calvin Klein black
sweater jacket and Joseph Abboud
charcoal trousers, which slenderized his
entire silhouette. We also colored his
hair, leaving a bit of salt and pepper at
his temples, and used scalp concealer
to hide a receding hairline.
Tony says: “As a professor, I’m sur-
rounded by young people. They’re so full
of energy; they keep me young.”
