that my 89-year-old mother taught
people how to grow victory gardens
during World War II. Given the current economic crisis, I think I’ll start
my own—it’ll give me something to
feel positive about.

For the best yield from your garden,
here’s something to consider: become
a hobby beekeeper. I’ve had a hive
for the past seven years and my plant
yields are incredible. Honeybees are
cost-effective, low maintenance, and
very rewarding. Plus, the honey we
get each year is an added bonus. If
you don’t want to maintain the hive
yourself but want the benefit of pollination, some local beekeepers will
bring a hive to your property and tend
it for you.

Beauty on a Budget
It’s a shame the magazine encourages
people to spend a lot of money to look
more “youthful and attractive.” To
suggest that the designer haircuts and
fashionable clothes shown in “Midlife
Makeover” are necessary for a woman
to look and feel good is nonsense. And
let’s not forget how expensive this all
is. As people transition toward retirement, doesn’t it make more sense for
them to focus on staying healthy and
fit, and wearing reasonably priced
clothing that survives the frequent
changes in fashion? There is beauty
in simplicity, and people can be attractive without spending so much in
salons and department stores.
