Go to the actor’s home in the canyons of
Los Angeles to hear him talk about how
he’s changed since his twins nearly died
from a medical error. Sitting near teddy
bears and books, the devoted dad explains
why fatherhood is one of his “favorite”
parts of life. Visit aarp.org/quaidvideo.

The cover story “One Dream at a Time” gives us a snapshot of actress Valerie Bertinelli coming of age at 50.
Valerie is proof that beauty isn’t just for the young. She
adopted healthier choices in this later chapter of her life.
And as she moves on to her new television show, Hot
in Cleveland, there will be more “hot” stories to come.
She is an example to all women that we are not getting
older—we are getting better.

Grandpa Elliott’s Got Talent
I was pleasantly surprised to see
the piece on Grandpa Elliott [“Soul
Man”]. How refreshing to see
someone who has used his God-given gifts for so long to entertain
and awaken the music in all of us.
Thanks for the sweet article.

A Lifesaving Decision
Thank you for editor Nancy Perry
Graham’s letter “When Dreams
Take Flight.” Nancy mentioned
seeing the crash of American
Airlines Flight 191 on May 25,
1979. My husband and I, and our
then–eight-month-old son, had
reservations on that flight, but
we changed our departure date.
Imagine our horror to hear of the
crash! Getting on a new flight
was unnerving, but we were the
lucky ones.

Memories of Mayberry
When I saw the story on Andy Griffith [“Whistle If You Love Andy
Griffith”], my heart leapt and a huge
smile—even an audible gasp—
escaped my lips. I’m 53 and a die-hard,
own-the-series, devoted fan of all
things Andy Griffith; last year I visited Mount Airy to immerse myself
in the Mayberry experience. Thank
you for giving a voice to that ageless
Mayberry style.
MICHELLE HILL
Huntington Beach, California
My husband and I recently visited
the lake where Andy and Opie
walked during the opening credits of
the show. (It’s actually in the heart
of Los Angeles.) We had so much fun
reliving their stroll. Thanks for helping me remember the experience.
