For 16 years Judy Arendt kept up
her 119-year-old Victorian row
house in Allentown, Pennsylvania—
ripping up carpets, stripping wall-
paper, and repairing ceiling cracks.
But now Arendt, 61, is sidelined by
osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. She’s
retired with a small pension; money’s
tight, which means pricey repairs
are out of the question. So is moving.
“My house is more affordable than
renting another place,” she says, “as
long as I can keep it from crumbling
around me.”
Fortunately, Arendt has another
way to pay for home improvements—
her savings at the local time bank. The
