Sweet Treats
Love is grand, but chocolate makes it
sweeter—which is why mankind (and
womankind) was cuckoo for cocoa long
before it became a valentine treat. The
Maya and Aztecs considered chocolate
sacred—“The blood of the earth and a gift
from the gods,” says chocolate historian
Mark J. Sciscenti. For Mesoamericans
living around A.D. 1500, chocolate was
an integral part of betrothal ceremonies,
with the men and women giving each
other chocolate. The gesture, Sciscenti
says, essentially meant “I am offering my
heart to you.” If you cherish chocolate as
much as you do your significant other, you
must make these luscious truffles: They’re
the perfect way to offer your heart. ;
