So it’s fitting that at 50, Cruise tears up the screen as a sizzling rock star in Rock of Ages. (“His pitch is incredible,” says costar Julianne Hough.) Three very public marriages (Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kid- man, and now Katie Holmes) and three kids have not cooled Cruise’s matinee-idol bona fides. “I know hat I want to be,” he said in 1986, and that was to be a skilled actor.
